We had a long drive between Gatlinburg and Hilton Head so we got on with it quickly after riding on the Sky Lift. Hilton Head Island has changed massively since I lived there in 2006-7. For a start I couldn’t find my old flat or the Piggly Wiggly I used to shop at because they have been changed into holiday villas and a Whole Foods Market. The island has gone a little more upmarket and in bulging with tourists.
We spent two out of three of our days there chilling out but on our final day we drove about an hour to Savannah, just across the state line into Georgia.
The film ‘Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’ (1997) is set in Savannah and I wanted to go to some of the filming locations, so we started at Bonaventure Cemetery. It’s quite a strange film but has a great cast so I would highly recommend watching it if you want to see what Savannah is like.
We then drove into town and walked around the beautiful squares and down to the river front. It was very hot and humid but really beautiful. I wished that I had lived here instead of Hilton Head Island all those years ago!
1700 (ish) miles, 6 states and 6 tanks of gas later, that was one hell of a road trip!
